tattoo Aftercare

Taking care of your new tattoo is crucial for its proper healing, as a tattoo is essentially an open wound and can be prone to infections. Below are detailed instructions on how to care for your new tattoo, along with things to avoid. If you have any questions or concerns, our tattoo artists are always ready to help—please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Immediate Care

  • Remove the bandage the next day.

  • Wash your hands before touching the bandage. Use warm water and antibacterial soap to gently clean the tattoo. Opt for a mild, unscented liquid soap.

  • Avoid using a washcloth, as they can host bacteria that cause infections.

  • Pat or dab the tattoo dry; do not rub it. Let it air dry for at least 10 minutes.

  • After three days, apply a very thin layer of A&D ointment.

  • Continue to wash the tattoo daily. As it heals, it will start to peel, similar to a sunburn.

Daily Care

  • Keep your hands clean by washing with liquid soap and warm water before touching the tattoo.

  • Keep the tattoo clean and free from grease, chemicals, and dirt.

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 4 weeks.

  • Avoid soaking the tattoo in water—stay out of pools and hot tubs.

  • Limit heavy sweating. Profuse sweating can affect a new tattoo much like soaking in water. If you're into heavy workouts, consider taking a break.

  • Wear loose clothing to let the tattoo breathe and avoid irritation.

  • Do not pick or scratch the tattoo as it heals.

  • Protect your tattoo from the sun with SPF 30 or higher sunscreen after 4 weeks.

Signs of Infection

If you notice any of the following signs, contact your doctor immediately:

  • Swelling and redness that increases around the site of the tattoo.

  • A severe burning and throbbing sensation.

  • Increased tenderness and pain upon touch.

  • An unusual discharge (yellow or green) with an offensive smell.
